Do Hotel Chevalier a Darjeeling

Uma das minhas fontes favoritas de novas músicas é a trilha-sonora de filmes bacanas.
Na Mostra Internacional de Cinema, que aconteceu aqui em SP no mês passado, eu me esbaldei também musicalmente. E é do novo filme de Wes Anderson, Viagem a Darjeeling, que vem a dica de hoje: "Where do you go to (my lovely)", de Peter Sarstedt.
Para começo de conversa, o filme é maravilhoso _ainda melhor que "Os Excêntricos Tenembaums" e "A Vida Marinha com Steve Zissou", também de Anderson. Trata-se da história de três irmãos que viajam à Índia para procurar a mãe, que largou tudo e foi morar num convento.
Pelo menos na sessão que vi (espero que seja assim em todas), Viagem a Darjeeling é precedido pelo hilário curta "Hotel Chevalier". Na verdade, pode até ser que o curta seja só a "primeira parte" do filme... O fato é que as duas peças se complementam e a música é a "cola" fundamental entre ambos.
Vamos a ela:
"Where do you go..." foi lançada em 1969 e conta a história de uma moça pobre que passa a fazer parte da elite parisiense. Para mim, o que mais chama a atenção na música são as vaaárias referências àos ícones culturais da época, o que dá um gostinho a mais, mas pode dificultar um pouco o entendimento da letra. Por isso, alguns sites de letras oferecem também um "glossário" da canção (coloquei um no fim do post).
Um detalhe que acabei de descobrir e que conecta ainda mais a música ao filme é que apesar do tom francês e de cantar em inglês, Peter é indiano.

Glossary:
Marlene Dietrich
- U.S. actress born in Berlin, Germany on December 27, 1901. She came
to the United States in 1930 and became a U.S. citizen in 1939.
Died May 6, 1992.

Zizi (Renee) Jeanmaire
- French dancer and actress. She played "Doro" in the 1952 made-for-TV
musical "Hans Christian Andersen" starring Danny Kaye, which was
choreographed by her husband, French dancer and choreographer,
Roland Petit.

Balmain
- French couturier Pierre Balmain (1914-1982).

Boulevard Saint-Michel
- a street in the Latin Quartier of Paris's Left Bank (south side of
the River Seine).

Sacha Distel
- jazz singer/guitarist born in Paris, France January 29, 1933.

Sorbonne
- college for theological studies at the University of Paris,
bequeathed by Robert de Sorbon around 1257. The name Sorbonne became
synonymous with the theological faculty of the university and later
with the university itself.

Juan-les-Pins
- Seaside resort on the coast of France between Cannes and Nice.

Saint Moritz
- popular winter tourist town on Lake Saint Moritz in eastern
Switzerland. Site of the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948.

Aga Khan
- spiritual leader, or imam, of the Ismaili sect of Shiite Muslims.
The present Aga Khan (Aga Khan IV; real name Karim al-Hussain Shah;
born December 13, 1936) is known primarily for his business
interests, which include a thoroughbred-horse-breeding enterprise
begun by his grandfather.
